Perenaud is a book series written by Adam Farouk. Setting sail from relatively familiar waters: Boston, Massachusetts; and London, England, it tells the story of struggling children's book author Angela Youngblood, who finds herself mysteriously transported to the very place she has been unwittingly writing about her entire life, a land known as Faerworld. Here, all that takes place spawns the myths and fables of earth, but beyond this magical horizon there looms a war that threatens total destruction and enslavement. To find her way home, Angela must confront and defeat the engineers of the coming conflict, an organization known to all as RHUMER. If she is to succeed, she must overcome her greatest fears, face her true self, and survive an awfully big adventure.
Characters:
EERTHWORLD (EARTH)
Angela Youngblood is the story's protagonist. As a child she was traumatized by having witnessed her mother's apparent murder; moreover, the weaponry used by the killers left no trace of her mother's body. Twenty years later and Angela is struggling to find herself; stuck in a dead-end adjunct position in a hostile academic environment, she is also, by all accounts, a failure at what she really wants to do, which is to write children's stories. Unable to shed the obsession she has of the symbols she has seen in her sleep since the night her mother died, Angela finds herself questioning her sanity, until a simple journal, given to her by her mother on the day she was born, reveals its magical essence and transports her to a world beyond her wildest dreams.
Jesse Youngblood is Angela's younger brother. Despite living in two different timezones, the two siblings have a close relationship, having suffered the loss of their mother so young. Neither he nor Angela ever knew their father; their mother seldom spoke of him, and little evidence has been found that even corroborates his existence. An avid gamer who works a low-paying night security job at the British Museum, Jesse is often accused of being a man-child who "refuses to grow up." Childish inclinations aside, he is one of a barely a handful who are unquestioningly loyal to and trusting of Angela.
Nicholas Ewart-Perks is Chief Editor at Pennington Rice Publishing. Once himself a writer, Nick is sympathetic to Angela's situation, but the board has made it clear to him that fantasy and fairy tales are out, and science and superheroes are in. Still, he's willing to go to bat for her, if she can meet him in the middle: can she write a story about both? Angela hopes for divine inspiration, not knowing that the answers she seeks have been with her all along.
Grelot LeFay is head of the Foxton Rare Book Collection at the New Royal Lancaster Museum in London. Having lived most of his life in the shadow of his famous sister, Chloë, he's eager to make his mark. When he finds out there may be an especially worthwhile find just outside of Boston, Massachusetts, he leaps at the opportunity to make the acquisition himself before his sister, hot on his heels and fuming, can get there.
Chloë LeFay is head of acquisitions at the New Royal Lancaster. Famed for having the best nose in the business, Chloë, it seems, can find rare and valuable objects out of nowhere, snapping them up for the Lancaster's burgeoning collections before the competition even has wind of their existence. It is much due to her that the Lancaster has succeeded as it has. She is sharp-eyed, quick-witted, and not to be trifled with.
FAERWORLD
Sexton Crowe is the super-powered god-king of the Sayatu people of Tuweni in Faerworld. He currently serves as Tuweni's Primi Ordis, a powerful role of great responsibility, which includes determining whether or not Tuweni wages war. Able to fly and possessing, it is said, the strength of a hundred men, he is quiet in repose, and thunderous and cocksure when provoked. He has few friends, a mysterious young woman named "Agent T.," and his valet named Steamer, among them.
Lili'akea is the erudite and sagacious leader of the Chand'allai people of Tuweni in Faerworld. Currently serving as Lady Chancellor of Tuweni, she is a critical source (some might say the only source) of balance within the Tuweni government. Traditionally the Chand'allai and the Sayatu have been in a state of perpetual warring. Now, forced to work together, it is unclear whether they have the capacity to put away old animosities and work together to ensure Tuweni's future is a bright one.
Ergaster Loughlin is a former colonel from the ancient order of wandering vigilantes knows as the Coleriders. His command, a good half of the Colerider Corps, lost a decisive battle during their brief war with Sexton Crowe and his Sayatu forces. When he refused to disband his unit in disgrace, Crowe cut off his hand and fed it to his dynuchi, giant amphibious reptiles, said to be related to the tiberons of old, and that Crowe keeps as pets. Loughlin, labeled a perennial enemy combatant, remains imprisoned indefinitely.
“These destinies are linked. Can’t you see? We are bound: united.”
